E005-2 Tile Patterned Underglaze Decal 12 cm (1000°C)

Underglaze decals can be applied to leather-hard or bisque-fired ceramic and tile objects.

Specifications:

Plate size 25x37 cm

Contains 6 pieces of decor with a diameter of 12 cm.

Preparation and Storage

Since all materials may behave differently under different conditions, test samples and trial firings should always be conducted before use.

Store transfer papers in a dry, dark environment, preferably in a sealed bag.

It is applied to bisque-fired ceramics and can also be used on leather-hard clay.

Decal Application Process

Design Preparation:

Underglaze decal prints come in different sizes. The decal sheet can be cut to the desired size as needed.

Placement:

Place the printed side of the decal onto the leather-hard clay or bisque surface where the design will be transferred. Gently press it down with your fingers to secure it.

Transfer Process:

The design is transferred using the "water slide" method.

Steps:

  1. Dip the decal, which is coated with transfer lacquer, into a water-filled container.
  2. After approximately 30–60 seconds, the lacquered design will start separating from the backing paper.
  3. If the decal is not fully ready, let it rest on a towel.
  4. Slide the decal onto the cleaned surface.

Ensure full contact between the pigment and the surface. Remove any air bubbles, dust, or excess water to prevent defects during firing. A rubber squeegee (also known as "fil kulağı") can be used to remove water, followed by gentle drying with a paper towel. If air bubbles remain, they should be pushed to the edges or popped with a needle.

Firing Process

The firing process for screen-printed decorations must be carefully managed:

  • Before firing, ensure that all foreign materials are removed from the surface to achieve a proper transfer from paper to ceramic.
  • Underglaze decals are fired at 1000°C to become permanently affixed to the ceramic surface.

Possible Defects and Precautions

Gaps:

Insufficient adhesion due to surface contamination (dirt, oil, or fingerprints) can result in missing spots after firing.

Shrinkage:

Poorly prepared or overly thick printing ink, along with humid or rapidly heated kiln conditions, may cause uneven shrinkage in some areas of the design.

Surface Bubbles:

Rapid temperature increases in the kiln may prevent proper vitrification of the pigments, leading to small craters and burst bubbles. To prevent this, the kiln temperature should be gradually raised to 350–450°C at the beginning of firing.

Conclusion

Underglaze decal (screen-printing) application is a widely used method that provides clean, sharp, and vibrant decorative prints when proper preparation, careful application, and controlled firing techniques are followed.

Since material behaviors can vary, always conduct test samples and follow proper storage guidelines to ensure optimal decoration quality and product longevity.
